14.09.2009 SEARCHING FOR LIGHT – A SERIES OF 10 SILKSCREEN PRINTS, COLLAGE + WATER COLOUR BY ARTIST ZAKEE SHARIFF
Vernissage: 1st of October, 7:30 pm
1st of October until 17th October
Grand Boutique and Gallery, Traugottstrasse 9, 8005 Zurich
October 09. A series of 10 silkscreen prints by artist and designer Zakee Shariff will be exhibited at the Grand Gallery, near Escher-Wyssplatz, Zürich from 1st of October until 17th October. ‘Searching For Light’ explores and draws upon the artists own personal search for unity via an evolving spiritual journey of meditation, breath and healing.
Exploring the duality of the world we live in, by engaging both the dark and light experienced in life, ‘Searching for Light’ captures a very personal moment in the artists life. On a holiday to France a year or so ago, Zakee practiced meditation each day, during which visions appeared that she then began to draw. These watercolours, which explored the duality of our existence, flowed from the meditations and became the basis for the exhibition. Via the stillness and listening to her own breath during the meditations Zakee came to the realisation that one can find joy, peace and magic in both the happy and sad moments in life. That unity lay in acceptance. A more recent personal experience brought Zakee to journey further into her own belief and spirituality, during which time Zakee became fascinated with the colourful refracted light and shapes of healing crystals and began drawing them. Fascinated by how, when the light shone through a crystal, the colours of the rainbow would shot out, Zakee decided to use the colours of the rainbow to translate the understanding she had gained from the meditational and healing journey, which was still evolving.
With rainbow colours perfectly reflecting the emotional spectrum of duality, from the light to the dark, ‘Searching For Light’ presents a metaphor for healing, a realisation that when the heart accepts and experiences both the light and shade in ones life then the true magic of life reveals itself to us. Only in the experience of both can the true beauty of the rainbow shine through.

More about Zakee Shariff:
London-based artist and designer Zakee Shariff set up her studio in 1993, making art and working freelance with a variety of fashion- and textiles-based clients. In 1996 she launched the Zakee Shariff ladies clothing collection, with a younger diffusion line called Maggie introduced in 2001. Both brands were extremely popular, selling across the globe, and a cult following developed for Zakee's work.
In 2005, she branched out from her clothing collections to explore different creative avenues, particularly her love of collaborative projects. The result has been a wide diversity of acclaimed new work within fine art and illustration, fashion and textiles, interior and product design, styling, publishing, and art direction.
While her output has been varied, Zakee's elegant drawings, prints, and paintings remain her signature. Indeed, whether applied to fabric, paper, canvas, clothing, wallpaper, album cover artwork, or any other medium, any one of her creations are instantly identifiable as a Zakee Shariff piece.
Zakee's aim always remains the same – to touch people through her work and spread a message of peace and love, hopefully encouraging people to think more deeply about the world they live in.
Zakee has recently designed a Winter 09 collection in collaboration with the lifestyle label Roxy Heart which is available at the GRAND Boutique.
